Starting Out in SEO: Where Should A New Small Business Even Begin?

    Starting Out in SEO

If you’ve just opened your doors (real or virtual), you already know the hustle is real. You want folks to find you, but with a slim budget and roughly zero spare time, the endless to-do list can feel brutal. And let’s be honest, the world of SEO can look confusing—or frankly, a little intimidating—especially when everyone claims their “secret sauce” will fix everything overnight.

I’ve been there, and here’s the thing: You absolutely don’t have to do everything at once. If you’re going to start anywhere with SEO services, keep it simple, focus on what actually moves the needle, and try not to sweat the rest (yet).

    1. Grab the Basics: Google Business Profile and On-Page SEO

Let’s kick things off easy—get your Google Business Profile up and running. It’s the fastest way for people nearby (or honestly, anyone searching on maps) to see you pop up. Make sure your info’s correct: phone, hours, website, and photos that actually look like you didn’t panic-snap them mid-yawn. This step helps with local searches, and it’s straightforward enough to knock out in an afternoon over coffee.

On-page SEO matters, too, even if—especially if—you don’t have a sprawling site. Start by making sure every page has clear, real titles (no keyword-mashing needed), sharp descriptions, and a little bit of unique info about who you are and what you offer. Forget about gaming the system; just use the words real customers would type to find you. That’s it.

    2. Content You’d Want to Read Yourself

So you don’t have a ton of blog posts yet? Relax, nobody expects you to churn out novels. But if you can answer a few common questions, share your story, or offer up genuinely helpful tips, you’re already ahead of plenty of bigger companies. Think about the questions people ask you all the time—“How does this work?” or “What’s the best option for me?” Short answers, written like you talk, go a long way.

And here’s an underrated trick: update your content when things change, whether it’s new hours, product additions, or just a fresh photo or two. Google actually likes to see movement on your site.

    3. Get Some Legit Reviews (No Cousin Kevin’s Fake Raves, Please)

If you’re local, those first few reviews make a difference. Ask your real customers to share a line or two about their experience. Don’t script it, just let them be honest (but hey, a thank you never hurts). Positive reviews boost trust and show up in search—win-win.

    4. Keep It Friendly for Phones

So many people check stuff from their phone now. If your website looks busted on mobile, you’ll lose folks before they ever call. Most modern website builders are mobile-friendly, but make sure to peek at your own site on your phone. Fix any weird buttons or funky formatting, pronto.

    5. Don’t Get Lost in the Weeds, but Bring in Backup If You Need

At some point, you’ll probably outgrow the basics and want to get fancy. That’s when you can think about beefing up your SEO services, like adding technical SEO or more in-depth link building. But early on, focusing on foundations wins every time.

Starting out is about doing the small stuff well, smiling through the mess, and letting good habits stack up. You’ve already got enough on your plate, but these baby-step SEO moves have a knack for paying off in the months ahead. Just keep plugging away—visibility is so worth it.
